What is your favorite quote?

At the End of Everything, All You Have Is God.

If someone asked me, “What is your favourite quote?” I wouldn’t have to think twice.

It is this:

“At the end of everything, all you have is God.”

It is only nine words long.

Yet the older I get, the more I realise that these nine words contain one of life’s greatest truths.

This is not just a quote that sounds good.

It is a reality that every single person will eventually face.

Some discover it through success.

Others discover it through pain.

But sooner or later, life teaches us all the same lesson:

Everything else can change. God never does.

Life Has a Way of Rearranging Our Priorities

When we are young, we believe life is about building something.

A career.

A business.

A reputation.

A family.

A ministry.

A future.

There is nothing wrong with any of these pursuits. In fact, the Bible encourages diligence, excellence, hard work and faithful stewardship.

But somewhere along the journey, many people begin to depend more on what God has given them than on God Himself.

Our careers become our confidence.

Our salaries become our security.

Our qualifications become our identity.

Our influence becomes our strength.

Without even noticing it, we begin to trust the gifts more than the Giver.

Then life happens.

A job unexpectedly comes to an end.

A diagnosis changes everything.

A business struggles.

A relationship breaks down.

A door closes.

A person we depended on can no longer help us.

And suddenly, we are reminded that beneath every title, every achievement and every possession is one unchanging truth:

We need God.

Not just His blessings.

Not just His miracles.

Not just His provision.

We need Him.

The Danger of Putting Everything Else First

One of the greatest tragedies is not that people reject God.

It is that many believers slowly replace Him.

Not with idols made of stone.

But with careers.

Ambitions.

Comfort.

Money.

Busyness.

Even ministry itself.

Jesus made God’s order unmistakably clear:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
— Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Notice that Jesus did not say, “Seek the kingdom when you have finished everything else.”

He said, “Seek first.”

God has never asked to become an addition to our lives.

He asks to be first.

We Sometimes Give Men What We Refuse to Give God

Think about it.

If your employer called an important meeting, you would probably arrive on time.

If your manager gave you an assignment with a deadline, you would work hard to complete it.

If you repeatedly ignored instructions at work, you would understand why your commitment was questioned.

Yet many believers give God excuses they would never dream of giving their employer.

“I’m too busy.”

“I forgot.”

“I’ve had a stressful week.”

“Maybe next time.”

Prayer is postponed.

Bible study becomes optional.

Soul winning is delayed.

Kingdom assignments are neglected.

Church becomes something we fit around our schedule instead of something that shapes it.

If Jesus is truly Lord, then He deserves more than whatever happens to be left over.

Success Without God Is Still Poverty

The world measures success by possessions.

God measures success by faithfulness.

A person can have wealth without peace.

Influence without purpose.

Popularity without joy.

Achievement without fulfilment.

Jesus asked one of the most searching questions ever recorded:

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
— Mark 8:36 (KJV)

Imagine gaining everything the world has to offer…

…and still losing what matters most.

That is not success.

That is tragedy.

Never Forget the Giver

There is nothing wrong with building a successful career.

There is nothing wrong with owning a business.

There is nothing wrong with pursuing excellence.

God delights in blessing His children.

But we must never become so occupied with maintaining God’s blessings that we neglect our relationship with God Himself.

Moses warned Israel:

“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth…”
— Deuteronomy 8:18 (KJV)

Never let the gift make you forget the Giver.

Never let the blessing replace the Blesser.

Never become so successful with the things God has given you that you no longer have time for the God who gave them.

The Question We Should All Ask

Every now and then, I ask myself a difficult question.

If everything I currently depend upon disappeared tomorrow, would God still be enough?

If the job was gone…

If the money was gone…

If the applause stopped…

If the opportunities disappeared…

If people walked away…

Would I still know that my life is secure because I still have God?

David did.

He wrote:

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
— Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

David did not say that his throne was his shepherd.

He did not say that his army was his shepherd.

He did not say that his wealth was his shepherd.

He said:

“The LORD is my shepherd.”

Everything else could change.

His Shepherd never would.

At the End of Everything…

One day, every one of us will leave this world.

Our houses will remain.

Our bank accounts will remain.

Our qualifications will remain.

Our achievements will become memories.

Someone else will occupy our office.

Someone else will drive our car.

Someone else will own what we once called ours.

Paul reminds us:

“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”
— 1 Timothy 6:7 (KJV)

When that day comes, the question will not be how much money we made.

It will not be how famous we became.

It will not be how many followers we had.

It will not be what position we held.

The question will be:

Did we know God?

Did we walk with Him?

Did we obey Him?

Did we love Him?

Because when everything temporary has passed away…

Only the Eternal One remains.

My Favourite Quote

So yes…

If you ask me for my favourite quote, this will always be my answer:

“At the end of everything, all you have is God.”

And perhaps today I would add one more sentence:

“The sooner you understand that, the better you will live everything that comes before the end.”

Do not wait until a crisis forces you to seek Him.

Do not wait until success distracts you from Him.

Do not wait until everything else fails before discovering the One who never will.

Walk with Him today.

Trust Him today.

Serve Him today.

Put Him first today.

Because when the applause has faded…

When the titles have disappeared…

When the money has been spent…

When life on earth has reached its conclusion…

At the end of everything, all you have is God.

And if you truly have Him…

You have everything that will ever matter.
