HOW TO JUDGE WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT

An Expository Teaching from Philippians 4:8

1. FOUNDATION TEXT

Philippians 4:8 (KJV)
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Philippians 4:8 (AMPC)
“For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].”

2. THE BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: YOUR THOUGHT LIFE IS YOUR LIFE DIRECTION

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Explanation (Bible Dictionary Insight):

  • Heart (Hebrew: leb) refers to the inner man — mind, will, emotions, and reasoning.
  • Your thoughts are not passive—they are gateways that determine outcomes.

Concordance Insight:
The word “think” in Philippians 4:8 comes from the Greek logizomai — meaning:

  • To reckon
  • To consider carefully
  • To take inventory
  • To evaluate and conclude

➡️ This means God is commanding you to become a gatekeeper of your mind, not a passive receiver.

3. THE DIVINE FILTER FOR YOUR THOUGHTS

Philippians 4:8 gives 8 spiritual filters. Anything that does not pass these filters should be rejected.

(1) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE TRUE

John 17:17 (KJV)
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

  • Truth is not opinion—it is God’s Word.
  • Any thought that contradicts Scripture is false and must be rejected.

✔ Ask: Is this thought aligned with God’s Word?

(2) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE HONEST (HONOURABLE)

  • Greek meaning: worthy of respect, noble, dignified

Romans 12:17 (KJV)
“Provide things honest in the sight of all men.”

✔ Ask: Does this thought produce dignity or shame?

(3) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE JUST

  • Meaning: righteous, in alignment with God’s standards

Isaiah 26:7 (KJV)
“The way of the just is uprightness…”

✔ Ask: Is this thought consistent with righteousness?

(4) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE PURE

  • Greek: hagnos — clean, undefiled, morally spotless

Matthew 5:8 (KJV)
“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”

✔ Ask: Does this thought contaminate my spirit or keep me clean?

(5) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE LOVELY

  • Meaning: pleasing, agreeable, inspiring love

✔ Ask: Does this thought produce love or bitterness?

(6) WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE OF GOOD REPORT

  • Meaning: well-spoken of, edifying

Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…”

✔ Ask: Would this thought lead to words that build or destroy?

(7) IF THERE BE ANY VIRTUE

  • Greek: arete — moral excellence, spiritual strength

✔ Ask: Does this thought strengthen my spiritual life?

(8) IF THERE BE ANY PRAISE

  • Meaning: worthy of celebration before God

✔ Ask: Can God approve this thought?

4. WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT THINK ABOUT

By reverse application, reject thoughts that are:

  • False → contrary to God’s Word
  • Dishonourable → shameful, degrading
  • Unjust → sinful or unrighteous
  • Impure → morally corrupt
  • Bitter → hateful, resentful
  • Negative reports → fear-driven, destructive
  • Weakening → draining spiritual strength
  • Condemnable → not praiseworthy before God

5. THE WARFARE DIMENSION OF THOUGHTS

2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

  • Thoughts are not neutral—they are spiritual battlegrounds
  • You are commanded to:
    • Cast down wrong thoughts
    • Capture them
    • Replace them

6. THE REPLACEMENT PRINCIPLE

You don’t stop wrong thinking by emptiness—you replace it.

Romans 12:2 (KJV)
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

➡️ Transformation happens when:

  • Wrong thoughts are removed
  • Right thoughts are installed

7. PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK: THE DAILY THOUGHT TEST

Before accepting any thought, ask:

  1. Is it true according to Scripture?
  2. Is it honourable?
  3. Is it righteous?
  4. Is it pure?
  5. Does it produce love?
  6. Is it edifying?
  7. Does it build virtue?
  8. Is it praiseworthy before God?

If it fails → Reject it immediately

8. SPIRITUAL CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR THOUGHT LIFE

Isaiah 55:7 (KJV)
“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts…”

➡️ Notice:
God deals with thoughts before actions

9. CONCLUSION: YOUR MIND IS A GARDEN

  • Thoughts are seeds
  • Meditation is watering
  • Actions are harvest

Galatians 6:7 (KJV)
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

10. DECLARATION

I take authority over my thought life.
Every thought that is not aligned with God’s Word is rejected.
My mind is renewed by the Word of God.
I think thoughts that are true, pure, just, and praiseworthy.
My life reflects the nature of Christ.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
