Why God Hates Lies, Lying, and Liars

Introduction: In a world where truth is often stretched, twisted, and manipulated, it’s important to remember that God, the ultimate source of wisdom and righteousness, despises lies, lying, and liars.

Throughout the Bible, numerous verses reveal God’s stance on dishonesty and deceit. As His followers, we are responsible for aligning our lives with His truth and rejecting falsehood in all its forms. So, let’s delve into the Word of God to understand why God hates lies, lying, and liars.

1. Proverbs 12:22 (ESV) – “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.”

This verse from Proverbs clarifies that lying lips are detestable to the Lord. God takes lying seriously and considers it an abomination. On the other hand, those who act faithfully, with honesty and integrity, delight Him. This verse highlights the stark contrast between lies’ wickedness and the truth’s righteousness.

2. Psalm 101:7 (NIV) – “No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence.”

In this psalm, King David expresses his commitment to righteousness and declares that those who practice deceit and speak falsely will not dwell in his house or stand in his presence. This verse emphasises that God’s presence is incompatible with lies and deception. Therefore, those who engage in dishonesty will be excluded from His presence.

3. Proverbs 6:16-19 (NLT) – “There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.”

In this passage from Proverbs, lies are explicitly listed as one of the things that the Lord detests. God’s hatred for lies is clear, along with other sinful behaviours such as murder, evil plotting, and sowing discord. Lies are not just frowned upon but are considered detestable in the eyes of God.

4. Ephesians 4:25 (NIV) – “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body.”

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul instructs believers in Ephesus to put off falsehood and speak truthfully to one another. He emphasises the importance of honesty and integrity within the community of believers, emphasising that they are all members of one body. This verse underscores the need for truthfulness in all relationships and interactions.

5. John 8:44 (ESV) – “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

In this powerful statement, Jesus confronts the religious leaders opposing Him. He exposes their deceit and identifies the devil as the father of lies. Jesus clearly states that lying is not aligned with the truth and is characteristic of the devil himself. This verse highlights the serious nature of lies and their source in the enemy.

Conclusion: God’s Word is unequivocal regarding His stance on lies, lying, and liars. He hates dishonesty and deceit, contrary to His nature of truth and righteousness.
