“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
There is a growing mindset in Christianity today that is both dangerous and deeply deceptive.
Many people want everything that belongs to the sheep…
…without living as sheep.
They want divine protection.
They want answered prayers.
They want peace.
They want favour.
They want provision.
They want victory over the devil.
They want eternal life.
But they have little or no intention of following the Shepherd.
They want the Shepherd’s blessings…
without the Shepherd’s leadership.
The Bible does not present that as Christianity.
The Greatest Misunderstanding of Our Generation
One of the greatest errors in modern Christianity is separating the blessings of Christ from the Lordship of Christ.
People quote promises.
They declare scriptures.
They confess blessings.
They pray aggressively.
Yet they deliberately ignore the One who gave those promises.
The promises of God were never designed to operate independently of obedience.
God has always been a covenant God.
Every covenant has privileges…
and every covenant has responsibilities.
Sheep Are Identified by One Thing
Jesus never said:
“My sheep know My blessings.”
He never said:
“My sheep attend church.”
He never said:
“My sheep know many Bible verses.”
He said something far more revealing.
John 10:27–28 (AMPC)
“The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never lose it or perish throughout the ages. [To all eternity they shall never by any means be destroyed.] And no one is able to snatch them out of My hand.”
Notice the order.
They hear.
They follow.
Then He gives.
Many today want Him to give…
without hearing…
and without following.
The Shepherd Does Not Follow the Sheep
Modern culture has quietly reversed God’s order.
Instead of following Jesus…
people expect Jesus to follow them.
“Lord, bless my plans.”
“Lord, support my decisions.”
“Lord, approve my lifestyle.”
“Lord, protect me while I ignore Your instructions.”
But Jesus never promised to follow us.
We are called to follow Him.
Luke 9:23 (AMPC)
“And He said to all, If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also].”
Notice…
The cross comes before the crown.
Following comes before enjoying.
Sheep Stay Close
One of the characteristics of sheep is proximity.
Sheep remain close to the shepherd.
Why?
Because they understand something many believers have forgotten.
Distance is dangerous.
The farther a sheep moves from the shepherd…
the closer it gets to wolves.
Many Christians slowly drift.
Prayer becomes optional.
Bible study becomes occasional.
Church becomes convenient.
Correction becomes offensive.
Submission becomes old-fashioned.
Then they wonder why life becomes spiritually difficult.
The problem was never that the Shepherd left.
The sheep wandered.
You Cannot Claim Psalm 23 While Rejecting Verse 1
Millions love Psalm 23.
They confidently declare:
“The Lord is my Shepherd…”
But very few stop to consider what that statement actually means.
It is not merely a comforting declaration.
It is a declaration of ownership…
guidance…
submission…
and relationship.
Psalm 23:1–4 (KJV)
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Notice something remarkable.
Every blessing in Psalm 23 flows from one reality:
“The Lord is my Shepherd.”
If He is not leading you…
why should you expect the benefits that belong to those who are being led?
The Blessings Belong Inside the Sheepfold
The sheepfold is not merely a place.
It represents divine order.
Spiritual covering.
Protection.
Accountability.
Biblical fellowship.
Submission to God’s government.
Many believers today have become spiritual freelancers.
No pastor.
No accountability.
No local church commitment.
No shepherd speaking into their lives.
Yet they expect God to provide all the protection reserved for sheep living within His order.
Even in nature…
isolated sheep rarely survive.
Neither do isolated Christians.
The Shepherd’s Rod Is Also Part of His Love
Many want comfort.
Few welcome correction.
Yet correction is one of the greatest evidences of God’s love.
Hebrews 12:6 (AMPC)
“For the Lord corrects and disciplines everyone whom He loves, and He punishes, even scourges, every son whom He accepts and welcomes to His heart and cherishes.”
A sheep that refuses correction is preparing itself for destruction.
Correction is not rejection.
Correction is protection.
The Devil Hunts Stragglers
The wolf does not normally attack the sheep standing beside the shepherd.
He looks for the isolated one.
The independent one.
The offended one.
The wandering one.
The self-confident one.
That is exactly why Scripture warns us:
1 Peter 5:8–9 (AMPC)
“Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.”
The safest place for a sheep…
is near the Shepherd.
Grace Never Eliminates Following
Some imagine that because salvation is by grace…
obedience is optional.
Nothing could be further from biblical truth.
Grace does not remove discipleship.
Grace empowers discipleship.
Jesus still says:
“Follow Me.”
He has never withdrawn that invitation.
Nor has He reduced its cost.
A Sobering Question
Ask yourself honestly.
Am I following Jesus…
or merely expecting Him to finance my ambitions?
Am I living under His Lordship…
or only claiming His promises?
Do I love His presence…
or only His presents?
Do I seek His will…
or only His help?
These questions determine far more than many realise.
The Good News
The Shepherd has never stopped calling.
No matter how far a sheep has wandered…
His voice is still reaching out.
He is still searching.
Still restoring.
Still leading.
Still receiving everyone who genuinely returns to Him.
But restoration begins with one decision.
Follow.
Not occasionally.
Not emotionally.
Not conveniently.
Wholeheartedly.
Because the safest place on earth has never been a location.
It has always been behind the Shepherd.
Final Thought
Every believer loves the promises of Psalm 23.
But never forget…
The green pastures belong to the sheep that follow.
The still waters belong to the sheep that follow.
The restored soul belongs to the sheep that follow.
The prepared table belongs to the sheep that follow.
The overflowing cup belongs to the sheep that follow.
Goodness and mercy pursue those who walk with the Shepherd—not those who continually wander from Him.
The question is not whether the Shepherd is faithful.
The question is…
Are you still following Him?
