Learn to walk with God before you learn to walk with the world

What’s the best advice you’d give to someone younger than you?

If I could sit across the table from my younger self—or from any young person just beginning their journey through life—and share one piece of advice, it would be this:

Learn to walk with God before you learn to walk with the world.

The world will teach you how to make a living. God will teach you how to live.

The world will tell you how to build a career. God will show you how to build a destiny.

The world will teach you how to gain followers. God will teach you how to become a leader worth following.

After years of victories, mistakes, lessons, prayers, and experiences, I have come to a simple conclusion:

Nothing in life works better than God’s way.

The Lie Many Young People Believe

One of the greatest deceptions of youth is the belief that there is plenty of time.

Plenty of time to get serious with God.

Plenty of time to stop certain habits.

Plenty of time to discover purpose.

Plenty of time to make important decisions.

But life has a way of moving faster than we expect.

The choices you make in your teenage years and twenties often shape the opportunities, relationships, habits, and realities you will live with for decades.

That is why the Bible says:

Ecclesiastes 12:1 (KJV)

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;”

God never intended for people to spend their strongest years chasing the world and then offer Him whatever remains.

He wants to guide you from the beginning.

Success Is Not What Most People Think

When I was younger, like many people, success looked like achievements, possessions, recognition, and influence.

But the longer I live, the more I realise something profound:

Success is not becoming who you want to be. Success is becoming who God created you to be.

You can climb the ladder of success and discover it was leaning against the wrong wall.

You can achieve your dreams and still miss your purpose.

You can gain applause from people and still lack the approval of Heaven.

Jesus asked one of the most sobering questions ever recorded:

Mark 8:36 (KJV)

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

That question still matters today.

Guard Your Relationship With God

If there is one investment that never fails, it is investing in your walk with God.

Develop a prayer life.

Read the Bible daily.

Attend church faithfully.

Serve God wholeheartedly.

Learn to hear His voice.

Obey Him quickly.

Many people seek God’s guidance only after they have exhausted their own wisdom.

A wiser approach is to seek Him first.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Notice that Jesus did not say chase things first and God later.

He said seek God first.

The order matters.

Choose Your Friends Carefully

One conversation can change your life.

One friendship can redirect your future.

One wrong association can destroy years of progress.

Many people underestimate the power of influence.

The people closest to you will either push you toward your destiny or pull you away from it.

The Bible says:

Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Pay attention to who influences your thinking.

Not everyone walking with you is walking in the same direction.

Character Is More Valuable Than Talent

Talent may open doors.

Character determines whether you stay in the room.

In a generation obsessed with visibility, God is still looking for integrity.

Your gifts can take you places your character cannot sustain.

Protect your honesty.

Keep your word.

Be trustworthy.

Do the right thing even when nobody is watching.

Because eventually, what you are in private becomes visible in public.

Marry Right

Few decisions affect life more profoundly than the person you choose to marry.

Career decisions matter.

Financial decisions matter.

But marriage impacts nearly every area of life.

Choose someone who loves God genuinely.

Choose someone whose values align with Scripture.

Choose purpose before appearance.

Choose character before charisma.

Choose spiritual compatibility before emotional excitement.

A good marriage can become one of God’s greatest gifts to your destiny.

Don’t Compare Your Journey

Social media has made comparison easier than ever.

Someone is buying a house.

Someone is getting married.

Someone is travelling the world.

Someone is building a successful business.

And suddenly you feel behind.

But comparison is a thief.

It steals joy.

It steals gratitude.

It steals contentment.

God is writing a unique story with your life.

Trust His timing.

Trust His process.

Trust His plan.

Your chapter three should not be compared to someone else’s chapter twenty.

Find Spiritual Fathers and Mentors

One lesson that transformed my life is understanding that God often uses people to guide people.

No one succeeds alone.

Learn from those who have gone ahead.

Ask questions.

Listen carefully.

Remain teachable.

Avoid the costly mistake of believing you know everything.

The fastest way to grow is to learn from the wisdom and experiences of others.

Remember Eternity

The greatest reality many people ignore is eternity.

Life on earth is temporary.

Eternity is forever.

Every achievement, possession, title, and accomplishment will eventually fade.

But your relationship with God will endure forever.

That is why living for Christ is not merely a religious choice.

It is the wisest life decision anyone can ever make.

My Final Advice

If I could leave every young person with one sentence, it would be this:

Love God passionately, obey Him completely, and follow His purpose relentlessly.

You may not always understand His plan.

You may not always see where He is leading.

But if you walk with Him, you will never walk alone.

Years from now, when you look back over your life, you will discover a truth that countless believers before you have already learned:

God’s way is not only the right way—it is the best way.

And there is no greater success than standing before God at the end of your journey and knowing that you faithfully fulfilled the purpose for which He created you.

“The greatest achievement in life is not becoming rich, famous, or powerful. The greatest achievement is discovering God’s purpose and spending your life fulfilling it.”
