WHEN UNBELIEF SHUTS DOWN POWER: An Expository Study of Mark 6:5

There is a sobering truth in Scripture that many believers overlook:

It is possible for God’s power to be present… and yet not fully manifest.

This is not because God is weak.

It is not because heaven is closed.

It is because of unbelief.

Let us look carefully at one of the most revealing passages in the Bible:

Mark 6:5–6 (KJV)

“And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.”

This Scripture demands deep study.

📖 THE CONTEXT: WHEN JESUS RETURNED HOME

Jesus had entered Nazareth — His own country.

Mark 6:3 (KJV)

“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.”

Instead of honour, they responded with offence and familiarity.

Instead of faith, they produced unbelief.

🧠 DEFINING UNBELIEF (BIBLE DICTIONARY + CONCORDANCE INSIGHT)

From a Bible dictionary and concordance perspective:

The Greek word often associated with unbelief is “apistia” It means: lack of faith, faithlessness, refusal to trust, or willful disbelief

This is critical.

👉 Unbelief is not ignorance

👉 It is not lack of information

It is a posture of the heart that refuses to align with truth.

⚠️ A SHOCKING REALITY: “HE COULD THERE DO NO MIGHTY WORK”

Mark 6:5 (KJV)

“And he could there do no mighty work…”

This is one of the most theologically weighty statements in Scripture.

It did not say:

He would not

It said He could not

This reveals a divine principle:

👉 God’s power flows where it is received by faith

🔒 HOW UNBELIEF OPERATES SPIRITUALLY

Let us examine this deeper through Scripture.

1. Unbelief Blocks Divine Manifestation

Hebrews 3:19 (KJV)

“So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”

The children of Israel had a promise…But unbelief kept them out.

2. Unbelief Dishonours God’s Ability

Numbers 14:11 (KJV)

“And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?”

Unbelief questions what God has already proven.

3. Unbelief Thrives on Familiarity

Nazareth said:

“Is not this the carpenter?”

They reduced revelation to commonness.

And when honour drops…faith disappears.

THE POWER OF BELIEF (FAITH)

Now let us contrast this with belief.

From a concordance standpoint:

The Greek word for faith is “pistis” Meaning: conviction, persuasion, trust, reliance upon God

Faith is not emotional.

Faith is spiritual conviction based on God’s Word.

🔥 WHAT BELIEF DOES

1. Belief Activates God’s Power

Matthew 9:29 (KJV)

“Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.”

The limitation was not in Jesus. It was in their capacity to believe.

2. Belief Connects You to the Supernatural

Mark 9:23 (KJV)

“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

Not some things. Not a few things. All things.

3. Belief Produces Tangible Results

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Faith is the currency of the Kingdom.

🪞 THE PARADOX: PRESENCE WITHOUT PROFIT

Nazareth had:

The presence of Jesus

The teaching of Jesus

The opportunity of Jesus

Yet…

👉 They profited nothing.

Why?

Hebrews 4:2 (KJV)

“For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”

The Word must be mixed with faith to produce results.

🔑 HOW TO OVERCOME UNBELIEF

Unbelief is not permanent.

It can be dealt with intentionally.

📖 1. Build Faith Through the Word

Romans 10:17 (KJV)

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Faith is not wished for.

Faith is built.

🙏 2. Ask God for Help

Mark 9:24 (KJV)

“And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”

This is a powerful prayer.

🧎‍♂️ 3. Guard Against Spiritual Familiarity

Never become too used to:

The Word The anointing The presence of God

Familiarity breeds unbelief.

🗣️ 4. Align Your Words With Truth

Faith grows when your confession agrees with God.

🔥 FINAL EXHORTATION

Mark 6:5 is not just a historical record. It is a spiritual warning.

You can:

Sit under powerful teaching

Be surrounded by God’s presence

Hear the Word consistently

And still experience limited results…If unbelief is present.

THE DECISION BEFORE YOU

Two forces are always at work:

Unbelief — that shuts down power

Belief — that releases it

The question is not:

👉 Is God able?

The question is:

👉 Will you believe?
