The Last Thing I Learned: The Day God Reminded Me I Am Not In Control

What is the last thing you learned?

“What is the last thing you learned?”

Most people would answer with something practical — a new skill, a lesson at work, or something learned from a book.

But for a believer, the most important lessons are the ones God teaches us.

The last thing I learned was not from a classroom, a meeting, or a strategy session.

It was a reminder from God:

I am not in control — He is.

And strangely, that lesson did not weaken me.

It strengthened my faith.

The Illusion of Control

Human beings naturally want control.

We want to control our plans, our future, our finances, our health, and sometimes even other people.

But Scripture continually reminds us that our lives are safest when they are surrendered to God.

The Bible says:

Proverbs 3:5–6

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Notice something powerful here.

God did not say:

“Understand everything first.”

He said:

Trust Me first.

Many believers struggle because they try to understand before they trust.

But the kingdom of God works the other way around.

What God Is Often Teaching Us

Very often, the greatest lessons God teaches us are not about information.

They are about transformation.

God teaches us:

Patience when we want speed.

Faith when we want certainty.

Humility when we want recognition.

Surrender when we want control.

The Apostle Paul learned this lesson deeply.

2 Corinthians 12:9

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Paul discovered something powerful:

When we admit our limitations, we make room for God’s power.

The Lesson That Keeps Repeating

If you walk with God long enough, you will notice something.

Some lessons repeat themselves.

Not because God forgot He taught you.

But because He is training your spirit.

Just as a teacher repeats important truths to students, God repeats spiritual lessons until they become part of our character.

One of the greatest repeated lessons in the Christian life is this:

God can be trusted.

Even when:

circumstances look uncertain doors close unexpectedly prayers seem delayed people disappoint you

God is still faithful.

Jesus Taught This Lesson Clearly

Jesus taught His disciples to stop worrying about the future and start trusting their Heavenly Father.

Matthew 6:33

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Notice the divine order:

Seek God first Trust

His righteousness

Watch Him supply what you need

The world says:

“Secure everything first, then serve God.”

Jesus says:

“Serve God first, and He will secure everything else.”

The Last Thing I Learned

So what is the last thing I learned?

God does not need my control.

He needs my obedience.

I learned again that:

God sees what I cannot see

God knows what I cannot know

God is already working ahead of me

Isaiah said it beautifully:

Isaiah 55:8–9

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Sometimes the greatest wisdom is simply this:

Trust God and keep walking.

A Question For You

Let me ask you the same question:

What is the last thing God taught you?

Was it:

to forgive someone?

to trust Him with your future?

to surrender something you were holding too tightly?

to step out in faith?

God is always teaching His children.

The question is:

Are we listening?

The Most Important Lesson You Can Ever Learn

There is one lesson greater than all others.

It is the lesson of salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Bible declares:

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Jesus died for your sins and rose again so that you can be reconciled to God.

If you have never received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you can do that right now.

Prayer of Salvation

If you want to give your life to Christ, pray this sincerely:

“Lord Jesus, I come to You today.

I believe You died for my sins and rose again.

I confess that I am a sinner and I ask for Your forgiveness.

Come into my life and be my Lord and Saviour.

From today, I belong to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, the Bible says:

2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Final Thought

The last thing I learned is something I hope I never forget:

God is wiser than my plans, stronger than my fears, and faithful beyond my understanding.

And if you walk with Him long enough, you will discover the same truth.
