If Your Pastor Only Pats Your Back, You Are in Trouble

Sheep Need Shepherds — Not Pets of Hirelings

Introduction:

Comfort Without Correction Is Dangerous

In many churches today, people love pastors who make them feel good. Messages that soothe, affirm, and comfort are welcomed. But when correction, rebuke, and spiritual confrontation disappear, something is wrong.

A pastor who only rubs your head and pats your back may be kind, but kindness alone does not make a shepherd.

If all your pastor does is make you comfortable, you may not be under a shepherd — you may be a pet being managed by a hireling.

The Bible makes a clear distinction between shepherds and hirelings, and the difference determines whether a believer grows, survives spiritual warfare, and fulfills God’s purpose.

1. Jesus Warned About Hirelings

The Lord Jesus Himself explained this difference clearly.

John 10:11–13 (KJV)

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth…

The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.”

A hireling is someone who works around sheep but does not truly care for them.

They are motivated by:

Reputation Income Popularity Convenience Avoiding confrontation

So when wolves appear — false doctrines, sin, spiritual deception — the hireling withdraws.

Why?

Because confronting danger may cost them members, money, or approval.

2. A Real Shepherd Does More Than Comfort

A true shepherd does not only comfort sheep.

He also:

corrects them

guides them

protects them

disciplines them

warns them

This is exactly what Scripture describes.

Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

“Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

Notice something powerful here.

Comfort does not come only from gentle words.

Comfort comes from the rod and the staff.

The rod represents correction and protection.

The staff represents guidance and direction.

Sheep are comforted because the shepherd intervenes when danger appears.

If a pastor never corrects you, never warns you, and never confronts your spiritual danger, then something essential is missing.

3. Sheep Are Not Pets

Many believers today want to be church pets, not sheep under a shepherd.

Pets receive:

affection

treats

attention

emotional comfort

But pets are not trained for survival.

Sheep under a shepherd are trained to:

recognize the shepherd’s voice

avoid wolves

stay in the fold

grow in maturity

Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account…”

Notice the seriousness.

A pastor must give account to God for your soul.

That responsibility requires more than encouragement.

It requires spiritual oversight.

4. Why Many Churches Avoid Correction Today

Correction is unpopular.

People prefer messages that say:

“You are amazing.”

“Everything will be fine.”

“God just wants you happy.”

But Scripture does not present the Christian life this way.

2 Timothy 4:2–3 (KJV)

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…

Paul warned that a time would come when people would reject correction.

Instead, they would gather teachers who only tell them what they want to hear.

This is the spiritual environment many believers live in today.

5. Real Shepherds Protect the Flock From Wolves

The most dangerous role of a shepherd is protecting the sheep from wolves.

Acts 20:28–30 (KJV)

“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock… to feed the church of God…For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.”

Paul warned pastors that wolves would come.

Wolves may appear as:

false doctrines

deceptive teachings

sinful cultural pressures

spiritual compromise manipulation and control

A shepherd who refuses to confront wolves is abandoning the flock.

6. When Pastors Become Entertainers

One of the greatest dangers in modern Christianity is the replacement of shepherds with entertainers.

Instead of spiritual formation, many churches now prioritize:

motivational speaking

crowd excitement

social media influence

emotional experiences

But spiritual growth requires something deeper.

Jesus did not build disciples by entertaining them.

He challenged them.

He corrected them.

He confronted them.

Sometimes He even offended them.

John 6:66 (KJV)

“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.”

Truth is not always comfortable.

But it is always necessary.

7. The Pastor’s Assignment Is Your Spiritual Formation

A real pastor is responsible for helping believers grow into spiritual maturity.

Ephesians 4:11–13 (KJV)

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints…”

The word perfecting means:

equipping

maturing

shaping

That process involves:

teaching

correction

instruction

accountability

Without these things, believers remain spiritually immature.

8. The Difference Between Comfort and Compromise

There is nothing wrong with comfort.

The Bible says God comforts His people.

But comfort without truth becomes compromise.

A shepherd who refuses to speak truth is not protecting sheep — he is exposing them.

True love does not avoid correction.

True love confronts danger.

Conclusion:

Choose a Shepherd, Not a Hireling

If your pastor only:

affirms you

avoids correcting you

never challenges your life

refuses to confront spiritual danger

Then something important may be missing.

You may be treated like a pet, not shepherded like a sheep.

And sheep without real shepherding are vulnerable.

The Church needs pastors who will:

guard the flock

teach sound doctrine

confront deception

guide believers into maturity

Because eternity is too serious for shallow shepherding.

Salvation Call

Before anything else, the most important question is this:

Are you truly part of the flock of Christ?

Jesus said:

John 10:27 (KJV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

You cannot follow the Shepherd if you have not first surrendered your life to Him.

If you want to give your life to Jesus today, pray this prayer sincerely:

Salvation Prayer

Lord Jesus,

I come to You today acknowledging that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy.

I believe that You died for my sins and rose again for my salvation.

Today I repent of my sins and surrender my life to You.

Come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior.

Write my name in the Book of Life and make me a new creation.

From today, I will follow You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
