“I AM – I HAVE – I CAN”
One of the most powerful spiritual disciplines in the life of a believer is the discipline of confession. The Bible consistently reveals that what a believer believes in his heart and says with his mouth determines the manifestation of God’s work in his life.
Faith does not only reside in the heart; faith must be expressed through words. God designed the believer’s life to operate through divine confession.
Romans 10:8–10 (KJV)
“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Your mouth is a spiritual instrument. When it is aligned with God’s Word, it becomes a creative channel through which divine realities manifest.
The believer must therefore build his confession around three powerful dimensions of redemption:
Who I AM in Christ
What I HAVE in Christ
What I CAN do through Christ
1. THE CONFESSION OF IDENTITY
“I AM”
The first foundation of the Christian life is identity. Many believers suffer spiritual defeat because they do not know who they are in Christ.
God never expects a believer to live from the standpoint of weakness. The New Testament constantly reveals the believer’s new identity in Christ.
1 John 3:2 (KJV)
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
Notice the language: “NOW ARE WE.”
This is not future. It is present reality.
Your confession must align with that revelation.
1 Corinthians 15:10 (KJV)
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”
Paul built his identity around grace, not weakness.
Galatians 2:20 (KJV)
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
This means the believer can boldly say:
I am crucified with Christ. I am alive in Christ. Christ lives in me.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Your confession must therefore include:
I am a new creature. I am born of God. I am a child of God. I am the righteousness of God in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”
Therefore the believer can declare:
I am chosen.
I am royal.
I am holy.
I am called out of darkness into light.
Your life will rise or fall to the level of your identity confession.
2. THE CONFESSION OF POSSESSION
“I HAVE”
After identity comes possession. Redemption did not only change who we are; it also gave us spiritual inheritance.
Many believers are spiritually wealthy but mentally poor because they have not learned to confess what they have in Christ.
1 John 5:12 (KJV)
“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”
The believer therefore can say:
I have eternal life.
1 Corinthians 2:16 (KJV)
“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
This is one of the most powerful confessions in the Bible.
The believer must declare:
I have the mind of Christ.
That means:
divine wisdom
spiritual understanding
supernatural insight
Ephesians 1:3 (KJV)
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
Notice the past tense: “HATH BLESSED.”
Not will bless.
Already blessed.
The believer can therefore confess:
I have spiritual blessings.
I have divine provision.
I have heavenly resources.
Colossians 2:10 (KJV)
“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.”
Therefore:
I have completeness in Christ.
You are not lacking spiritually.
2 Peter 1:3 (KJV)
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.”
This means:
I have everything necessary for life.
I have everything necessary for godliness.
1 John 4:4 (KJV)
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
Therefore the believer boldly says:
I have the Greater One living in me.
I have victory over the enemy.
3. THE CONFESSION OF ABILITY
“I CAN”
The third dimension of confession is ability.
God never intended for believers to live in helplessness. Through Christ, supernatural ability becomes available.
Philippians 4:13 (KJV)
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
This is not motivational language.
It is a statement of divine empowerment.
Mark 9:23 (KJV)
“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Faith unlocks possibility.
John 14:12 (KJV)
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”
The believer must therefore confess:
I can do the works of Christ. I can walk in divine power.
Romans 8:37 (KJV)
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Therefore declare:
I can overcome every battle. I can prevail through Christ.
2 Corinthians 3:5 (KJV)
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.”
This produces the confession:
I can succeed because my sufficiency is from God.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER:
BUILDING YOUR DAILY CONFESSION
A believer should consciously build his confession daily.
For example:
I AM
I am a child of God. I am the righteousness of God in Christ. I am a new creature. I am chosen and called. I am seated with Christ in heavenly places.
I HAVE
I have eternal life. I have the mind of Christ. I have all spiritual blessings. I have the Greater One living in me. I have everything that pertains to life and godliness.
I CAN
I can do all things through Christ. I can overcome every attack of the enemy. I can walk in victory. I can fulfil my divine purpose.
CONCLUSION
The Christian life is voice-activated by faith.
Your confession must be intentionally built around:
Who you are in Christ (I AM)
What you possess in Christ (I HAVE)
What you can do through Christ (I CAN)
When a believer consistently declares God’s Word, he aligns himself with heaven’s reality.
Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Therefore:
Build your confession.
Speak God’s Word.
And let your mouth agree with heaven.
Who Can Truly Make These Confessions?
The powerful confessions — “I AM, I HAVE, and I CAN” — are not merely positive statements. They are redemption realities that belong only to those who have entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ through the new birth.
A person cannot claim the privileges of redemption without first receiving the Author of redemption.
John 1:12 (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
Until a person receives Christ, he may admire the truths of Scripture, but he has not yet entered into them.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Notice the phrase “in Christ.”
The confessions belong to those who are in Christ—those who have experienced the new birth.
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
When a person receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour:
He becomes a child of God
He receives eternal life
He enters into the inheritance of redemption
Only then can he confidently declare:
I AM who God says I am.
I HAVE what God says I have.
I CAN do what God says I can do.
Salvation Prayer
If you have never consciously given your life to Jesus Christ, you can do so right now.
Pray this prayer sincerely from your heart:
“Lord Jesus,
I come to You today.
I believe that You died for my sins and that God raised You from the dead.
I repent of my sins and I receive Your forgiveness.
Today I confess You as my Lord and my Saviour.
Come into my life and make me a new person.
From today, I belong to You.
Thank You for saving me.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
If You Just Prayed This Prayer
Congratulations! You have just taken the most important step in life—becoming a child of God.
Now the truths in this confessions belong to you.
