WE ARE MARRIED. DOES GOD CARE ABOUT SEXUAL POSITIONS DURING SEX?

A Christian Expository Biblical Teaching

Introduction

The Bible does not explicitly regulate or prescribe sexual positions for intimacy between a legally married husband and wife. However, the fact that the Bible is silent about sexual positions is not a license for Christian couples to learn from the world. Scripture does not give the world authority to define sexual expression for believers, and Christian intimacy must not imitate pornography, secular media, or sexually broken cultural narratives. What God does not specify in Scripture, the world must not define for the believer.

God cares about sex, but His concern is covenant, purity, love, mutual consent, honor, fidelity, and a renewed Christ-centered mind, not the physical positioning of the body.

Romans 12:2 (KJV)

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Even in the area of intimacy, believers must refuse conformity to the world and embrace transformation of mind by God’s Word.

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT SEX APPROVED BY GOD

1. MARRIAGE IS THE ONLY APPROVED BOUNDARY FOR SEX

Hebrews 13:4 (KJV)

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

This verse teaches that:

Marriage is honorable The marriage bed is undefiled (pure) Sexual sin outside marriage comes under God’s judgment

1 Corinthians 7:2 (KJV)

“Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”

1 Corinthians 7:3 (KJV)

“Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.”

1 Corinthians 7:4 (KJV)

“The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.”

These verses show that:

Sex is given as a guard against fornication It is a mutual marital responsibility There is shared access, not selfish ownership Consent and mutual giving are implied, not force

2. SEX IS PART OF GOD’S DESIGN FOR ONENESS, BONDING, AND JOYFUL DELIGHT

Genesis 2:24 (KJV)

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

The phrase “one flesh” includes:

Emotional union Spiritual union Physical sexual union

Proverbs 5:18 (KJV)

“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.”

Proverbs 5:19 (KJV)

“Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”

From this we understand:

God blesses marital sexual expression He commands rejoicing in one’s spouse He permits satisfaction and delight Pleasure is described as acceptable, affectionate, and abundant in love There is no shame in God-approved marital desire

3. GOD EXPECTS MARITAL INTIMACY TO BE UNDEFILED IN MOTIVE, NOT WORLDLY IN IMITATION

1 Thessalonians 4:3 (KJV)

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication.”

1 Thessalonians 4:4 (KJV)

“That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour.”

Even in marriage, believers must conduct intimacy:

In honor In sanctification (set-apartness) In purity of conscience Not in defiling motives or worldly imitation

SEX IMPLIED AND CELEBRATED IN SONG OF SOLOMON (APPROVED IN MARRIAGE)

Song of Solomon is a poetic celebration of marital love, filled with romantic and sexual metaphors, expressed without sin, shame, or condemnation — because the context is spouse-to-spouse covenantal love.

Song of Solomon 4:10 (KJV)

“How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!”

Song of Solomon 4:11 (KJV)

“Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.”

These verses affirm:

Romantic admiration Sensual affection Marital context: “my spouse” is repeated

Song of Solomon 4:16 (KJV)

“Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.”

Here the wife:

Invites her husband into intimacy Uses the garden metaphor to imply sexual union Calls him “my beloved” — meaning exclusive covenant love

Song of Solomon 5:1 (KJV)

“I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.”

Here the husband:

Accepts the invitation Describes the enjoyment of intimate union Declares it abundant, delightful, and without shame Again emphasizes marriage: “my spouse”

Song of Solomon 7:6 (KJV)

“How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!”

Song of Solomon 7:7 (KJV)

“This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.”

Song of Solomon 7:8 (KJV)

“I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples.”

Song of Solomon 7:9 (KJV)

“And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.”

These verses imply:

Physical admiration Romantic and sexual desire Delightful intimacy Again addressed to “my beloved” (husband/wife covenant context)

WHAT THE BIBLE FORBIDS ABOUT SEX

The Bible is explicit about sexual immorality, and believers must not confuse marital freedom with sinful license.

SEX OUTSIDE MARRIAGE

Exodus 20:14 (KJV)

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

1 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV)

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.”

SAME-SEX ACTS

Romans 1:26 (KJV)

“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature.”

Romans 1:27 (KJV)

“And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.”

BESTIALITY

Exodus 22:19 (KJV)

“Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.”

Leviticus 18:23 (KJV)

“Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith…”

INCEST AND SEXUAL PERVERSION

Leviticus 18:6 (KJV)

“None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.”

LUST THAT CARRIES THE SPIRIT OF ADULTERY

Matthew 5:28 (KJV)

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

Even in marriage, the believer must reject defiling fantasies, pornography imitation, or degrading motives.

BIBLICAL CONCLUSION

The Bible teaches clearly that:

God approves sex in marriage God celebrates marital desire and pleasure God never prescribes sexual positions But His silence is not a license for worldly learning He forbids immorality, defilement, coercion, harm, and lust-driven motives Marital bodies are free, but marital hearts must be holy

Therefore, sex approved by God is:

✔ Between a married husband and wife only

✔ Mutual, consensual, and not forced

✔ Loving, honouring, affectionate, and bonding in motive

✔ Physically safe, not harmful, not degrading

✔ Undefiled in conscience, spirit, and influence

✔ Exclusive, faithful, and not conformed to worldly perversion

Purity is God’s focus, not positions.

Covenant is His boundary, not culture.

Renewed minds must govern intimacy, not the world.

1 Corinthians 6:20 (KJV)

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Even intimacy in marriage must ultimately glorify God in body and spirit.
