A WORKMAN APPROVED

How Pastors Must Conduct Themselves Before God and His Service

Expository Teaching from 2 Timothy Chapter 2

Introduction: Ministry Is a Trust, Not a Title

The book of 2 Timothy is Paul’s final epistle—written not to a crowd, but to a pastor. Chapter 2 is a manual for ministerial conduct, revealing how a servant of God must live, serve, endure, and relate with God, the Word, and people.

Paul’s emphasis is not on gifting, but on conduct, character, and consecration.

1. Be Strengthened by Grace, Not Position

📖 “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Tim. 2:1)

Ministry strength does not come from:

Experience Titles Popularity Past successes

It comes from grace.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Grace is the divine supply that enables us to:

Endure pressure

Remain faithful

Serve without burnout Stand approved before God

A pastor who is not continually strengthened by grace will eventually lean on flesh.

2. Commit the Truth Faithfully to Others

📖 “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men…” (v.2)

Ministry is generational, not personal.

Paul outlines four generations:

Paul

Timothy

Faithful men

Others also

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Pastors are trustees of doctrine, not inventors of truth The measure of success is not how many follow you, but how many can continue without you

Faithfulness, not brilliance, is the qualification for entrustment.

3. Embrace Hardness as a Good Soldier

📖 “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” (v.3)

Ministry is warfare, not entertainment.

A good soldier:

Expects hardship

Does not complain

Understands the mission

Endures discipline

📖 “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life…” (v.4)

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Pastors must avoid entanglements that dilute focus:

Excessive pursuit of comfort

Carnal distractions

Worldly validation

Our aim is singular: to please Him who enlisted us.

4. Minister According to God’s Rules

📖 “And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.” (v.5)

God does not reward results alone—He rewards obedience to His order.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Ministry done outside God’s principles attracts no crown

Methods matter to God

Motives matter to God

You can build big and still be disapproved if you do not strive lawfully.

5. Labour with Patience Like a Husbandman

📖 “The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.” (v.6)

Ministry fruit comes through:

Consistency

Patience

Long-term labour

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Pastors must feed themselves spiritually You cannot keep giving what you are not partaking of

A dry altar produces dry people.

6. Handle the Word Accurately

📖 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (v.15)

Approval is before God, not men.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Ministry shame comes from careless handling of Scripture

The Word must be divided rightly—not emotionally, culturally, or commercially

Revelation does not replace study; it rewards it.

7. Avoid Profane and Empty Talk

📖 “But shun profane and vain babblings…” (v.16)

Not every conversation is ministry-safe.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Words shape doctrine

Casual error spreads spiritual disease

Pastors must guard both speech and platforms

8. Live as a Sanctified Vessel

📖 “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour…” (v.21)

God uses clean vessels, not just gifted ones.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Sanctification precedes usefulness:

Purity of life

Purity of motive

Purity of doctrine

You choose the kind of vessel you become by what you allow or purge.

9. Flee Youthful Lusts and Pursue Godly Virtues

📖 “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace…” (v.22)

Ministry demands both fleeing and following.

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Some things must be run from, not prayed over Pastors must actively pursue virtues that protect longevity

10. Serve with Meekness and Redemptive Correction

📖 “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men…” (v.24)

Authority in ministry is not harshness; it is meek strength.

📖 “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves…” (v.25)

🔑 Pastoral Insight

Correction must aim at restoration

Ministry is not about winning arguments but winning souls

Conclusion: Ministry Conduct That Heaven Approves

2 Timothy 2 presents the pastor as:

A son strengthened by grace

A teacher committed to generational transfer

A soldier enduring hardship

A workman approved by God

A sanctified vessel fit for the Master’s use

📖 “That they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil…” (v.26)

Our conduct determines whether we become tools of deliverance or casualties of ministry.

Final Charge to Pastors

Minister before God, not crowds.

Seek approval, not applause.

Guard your life, doctrine, and conduct—for the sake of the flock, the future, and eternity.

PASTORAL RECOMMITMENT PRAYER

Salvation Call: A Call to New Life in Christ

Before ministry, service, or leadership, the most important matter is your relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

The Bible says:

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Salvation is not achieved by works, titles, or church involvement. It is received by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” (John 1:12)

If you are not born again, or you desire to rededicate your life fully to Christ, this is your moment.

Salvation Prayer

Please pray this prayer sincerely from your heart:

Father God,

I come to You in the Name of Jesus.

I acknowledge that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself.

I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins

and that He rose again on the third day for my justification.

Today, I receive Jesus as my Lord and my Saviour.

I confess Him openly as Lord of my life.

By faith, I receive forgiveness of sins,

eternal life, and the power to live a new life.

I declare that I am born again,

I am a child of God,

and my life will never remain the same.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Welcome to the Family of God

If you prayed this prayer sincerely, congratulations 🎉

You are now born again, forgiven, accepted, and received into the family of God.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Salvation is the beginning—not the end. God’s desire is that you grow, be discipled, and fulfil your divine destiny.
