The Conduct of a Faithful Steward

EXPOSITORY TEACHING FOR STEWARDS

“The Conduct of a Faithful Steward”

📖 Text: 2 Timothy 2:1–12 (KJV)

Scripture Reading (KJV)

1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evildoer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us.

INTRODUCTION

Stewardship is not a position for convenience; it is a calling that demands character, discipline, loyalty, and endurance. In this passage, Apostle Paul instructs Timothy—and by extension all stewards—on how to conduct themselves in service using three powerful pictures: a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer.

1. A STEWARD MUST DRAW STRENGTH FROM GRACE (v.1)

“Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”

A steward does not serve by natural energy alone. Strength for service comes from grace, not talent, age, education, or experience. Grace enables consistency, humility, and endurance.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Depend on God daily

✔ Avoid pride and self-confidence

✔ Serve with humility and gratitude

2. A STEWARD MUST BE FAITHFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY (v.2)

“Commit thou to faithful men…”

Faithfulness is the first qualification of stewardship. A steward handles people, resources, time, and spiritual responsibilities on behalf of another. God entrusts more only to those proven faithful with little.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Keep instructions accurately

✔ Be reliable and accountable

✔ Protect the vision and doctrine of the house

3. A STEWARD MUST ENDURE HARDSHIP LIKE A SOLDIER (vv.3–4)

“Endure hardness, as a good soldier…”

Soldiers expect discomfort, discipline, and delay. A steward must not be entangled with distractions, offence, or personal agendas. The goal is to please the One who enlisted him—God and spiritual authority.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Accept corrections without bitterness

✔ Stay focused on assignment

✔ Avoid unnecessary distractions and entanglements

4. A STEWARD MUST SERVE BY RULES AND ORDER (v.5)

“Not crowned, except he strive lawfully.”

Zeal without obedience disqualifies. God rewards service done His way, not just good intentions. Structure, order, and protocol matter in God’s house.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Respect leadership structures

✔ Follow laid-down procedures

✔ Avoid shortcuts, rebellion, or familiarity

5. A STEWARD MUST LABOUR DILIGENTLY LIKE A FARMER (v.6)

“The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker…”

Farming requires patience, consistency, and unseen labour. Stewards must be willing to serve when no one is watching. God rewards diligent service in due season.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Serve consistently, not occasionally

✔ Avoid murmuring or comparison

✔ Trust God for reward, not men

6. A STEWARD MUST REMAIN CHRIST-CENTERED (vv.8–10)

“Remember that Jesus Christ… was raised from the dead…”

Service must always point back to Christ, not self. Even when stewards suffer, the work of God continues. Sacrifice in service contributes to the salvation and growth of others.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Maintain a Christ-first mindset

✔ Serve with eternal purpose

✔ Value souls above comfort

7. A STEWARD MUST REMAIN LOYAL TO THE END (vv.11–12)

“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…”

Faithfulness in service has eternal consequences. Endurance leads to reigning; denial leads to loss. Stewardship is both present responsibility and eternal investment.

Steward’s Conduct:

✔ Stay loyal under pressure

✔ Finish well, not just start well

✔ Keep eternity in view

Salvation Prayer

If you desire to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, pray this sincerely:

“Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus.

I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I need Your salvation.

I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again for my justification.

I receive Jesus into my heart as my Lord and Saviour.

I confess Him as Lord over my life.

Thank You for saving me.

I am now a child of God.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (KJV)

CONCLUSION

A steward’s conduct must reflect:

Strength by grace

Faithfulness in trust

Discipline like a soldier

Obedience like an athlete

Diligence like a farmer

Loyalty unto the end

This is how God’s house is preserved, His vision advanced, and His servants crowned.

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”
