Why Faith Works Best Outside Human Reason
(A Biblical Reflection from Matthew 14:28–31 & Hebrews 12:2)
Culled from: Matthew 14:28–31; Hebrews 12:2
INTRODUCTION — WHEN REASON COLLIDES WITH REVELATION
Faith will eventually demand that you act beyond what makes sense.
There comes a moment in every believer’s journey when God’s instruction contradicts human logic.
Not because God is irrational, but because logic cannot measure divine power.

Peter’s night on the water reveals a truth many believers struggle with today:
Faith begins where human reasoning ends.

1️⃣ WHEN GOD’S INSTRUCTION DOES NOT MAKE SENSE
Peter did not step out when the storm stopped.
He stepped out while the storm was raging.
Jesus’ instruction was simple—“Come”—yet completely unreasonable to the natural mind.
No calculations.
No explanations.
No guarantees.
Just a word.
“And Peter answered Him and said, Lord, if it be Thou, bid me come unto Thee on the water.” — Matthew 14:28 (KJV)
God often speaks before conditions change.

2️⃣ LOGIC IS A POOR MASTER IN SPIRITUAL MATTERS
Logic asks: How deep is the water? How strong is the wind? What are the odds?
Faith asks only one question:
Who spoke?
Peter walked not because the water changed, but because the word sustained him.
As long as his eyes remained on Jesus, the impossible became possible.

3️⃣ WHEN FOCUS SHIFTS, FAITH FAILS
The Bible says something striking:
“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink…” — Matthew 14:30 (KJV)
Peter didn’t sink because the storm increased.
He sank because his focus shifted.
Fear grows when attention moves from Christ to circumstances.

4️⃣ FAITH DOES NOT DENY REALITY — IT OUTRANKS IT
Faith is not pretending the storm doesn’t exist.
Faith is refusing to let the storm define the outcome.
Jesus did not remove the storm before restoring Peter.
He restored Peter within the storm.
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” — Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

5️⃣ FAITH WALKS WHERE LOGIC CANNOT FOLLOW
This is the quiet triumph of mature faith:
Logic stops at probability Faith continues on instruction
The miracle was not that Peter stood on water.
The miracle was that he stood on a word.

🔥 FINAL TRUTH — A CHOICE WE ALL FACE
❌ Logic stares at waves
✅ Faith looks at Jesus
Logic says:
Play safe.
Faith says:
Obey God.

God’s Will · God’s Way · God’s Time
CONCLUSION — WHERE IS YOUR FOCUS RIGHT NOW?
You cannot walk by faith while consulting fear.
You cannot obey God while negotiating with logic.
The storm may not change.
But your footing will—if your eyes stay on Jesus.
🙏 SALVATION PRAYER
If you desire to surrender your life to Jesus Christ, pray this prayer sincerely:
Heavenly Father,
I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I need a Saviour.
I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again for my justification.
Today, I repent of my sins and turn my life completely to You.
I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Saviour.
Thank You for forgiving me, cleansing me, and making me Your child.
From today, I belong to God.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
