📖 “So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin.” — James 4:17 (AMP)
The Weight of Knowing
The Word of God reminds us that sin is not just about what we do wrong but also about what we fail to do right. James 4:17 is a sobering scripture that shifts our perspective. It teaches us that when we know the right path and deliberately ignore it, we grieve the heart of God.
It is possible to appear “innocent” outwardly, yet be guilty before God because of neglected obedience. Delayed obedience is disobedience. Partial obedience is disobedience. True obedience is doing what God asks, when He asks, and how He asks.
Ignorance Is Not Bliss
Some people excuse themselves by saying, “I didn’t know what to do.” But Scripture calls us to seek knowledge. Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” If we don’t know God’s will, it is our responsibility to ask, search the Scriptures, seek counsel, and pray until clarity comes.
Jesus said in Matthew 7:7:
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Ignorance may feel safe for a while, but God desires His children to walk in the light of His truth.
The Courage to Do
On the other hand, there are times when we know exactly what God requires, yet fear, pride, or convenience keeps us from acting. It could be forgiving someone, stepping into ministry, giving generously, or breaking away from sin.
Colossians 3:23 reminds us:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Doing the right thing is not about pleasing men but honoring God. Each act of obedience is a seed that brings divine reward.

A Call to Action
1. If you don’t know, ask. Seek God’s will through His Word, prayer, and godly counsel.
2. If you know, act. Don’t delay. Don’t excuse. Don’t postpone. Do it as unto the Lord.
3. Remember the why. Obedience glorifies God, shapes our character, and positions us for His blessings.
Closing Prayer
🙏 Father, give me the humility to ask when I don’t know and the courage to act when I do. Deliver me from procrastination, fear, and disobedience. Teach me to live in the light of Your Word and to do all things as unto You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
