Separating from Negative Ancestral Roots: Removing the Cause of the Curse

Many believers today struggle with invisible battles that seem to follow their family line—cycles of poverty, repeated failures, addictions, untimely deaths, marital breakdowns, and other generational afflictions. The Bible identifies these as the effects of ancestral curses, rooted in sin, rebellion, and demonic oppression passed down from generation to generation.

But praise be to God: through Christ Jesus, we are redeemed from every curse and separated from every negative ancestral root.

Understanding Ancestral Curses in Scripture

The Bible shows that sin can have generational consequences:

• Exodus 20:5 (KJV) – “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.”

This doesn’t mean God punishes children for their father’s sins directly (see Ezekiel 18:20), but rather that sinful choices open doors to spiritual oppression that affect descendants until the chain is broken.

Examples in the Bible:

• Gehazi’s greed (2 Kings 5:27) attracted a generational curse of leprosy.

• Eli’s household (1 Samuel 2:30–33) came under judgment because of disobedience.

Christ Our Deliverer from the Curse

The Good News is that Jesus took our place and bore every curse:

• Galatians 3:13 (KJV): “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”

• Colossians 2:14–15 (NIV): “Having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

When we come into Christ, we are transferred into a new family line—the family of God. The old legal claims of darkness are cancelled.

The First Step: Be Born Again

Before any curse can truly be broken, you must first belong to Jesus Christ. Without salvation, you remain under the authority of the old bloodline. But when you are born again, you receive a new identity and inheritance in Christ.

• John 3:3 (KJV): “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

• Colossians 1:13 (NIV): “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.”

Salvation Prayer

If you have not yet given your life to Jesus, pray this now from your heart:

Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I know I am a sinner and I cannot save myself. I believe You died for me on the cross and rose again for my justification. Today, I confess You as my Lord and Saviour. Wash me with Your blood, break every curse, and write my name in the Book of Life. From today, I belong to You, and I receive Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for saving me. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer sincerely, you are now a child of God, and the foundation of every ancestral curse is broken.

Steps to Remove the Cause of the Curse

Deliverance is not just about breaking manifestations, but also removing the root cause. Here are biblical steps:

1. Acknowledge and Renounce Sin

Sin opens the door to curses. Repentance shuts it.

• 1 John 1:9 (KJV): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

2. Renounce Ancestral Ties in Christ’s Name

• 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV): “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

3. Replace Lies with the Truth of God’s Word

• John 8:32 (KJV): “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

4. Apply the Blood of Jesus

• Hebrews 12:24 (KJV): “…and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

5. Break the Curse and Establish Blessing by Decree

• Job 22:28 (KJV): “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.”

6. Walk in Obedience and Holiness

• Deuteronomy 28:1–2 (KJV): “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God… all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee…”

Authentic Christian Insights

• Derek Prince (Blessing or Curse: You Can Choose): “Every curse is like a dark shadow, but the light of Christ dispels it. Deliverance is not automatic; it must be claimed by faith, repentance, and confession.”

• My father, Rev. Olusola Areogun, the General Overseer of Dream Centre of the Life Oasis International Church, often emphasises that “You cannot carry an old ancestral root into a new covenant destiny. The cross is the place of separation.”

• Watchman Nee: Spiritual authority flows from union with Christ. If you are in Him, no demonic ancestry has the right to rule over you.

Prayer of Separation and Freedom

Heavenly Father, I thank You for sending Jesus to redeem me from every curse. I confess and repent of all ancestral sins and covenants of darkness. By the blood of Jesus, I renounce every tie to idolatry, witchcraft, poverty, failure, sickness, and death operating in my family line. I declare that I am a new creature in Christ. The old has passed away. I break every curse over my life and establish God’s blessings for me and my generations. I belong to the family of God, and no ancestral power shall have dominion over me again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conclusion

Negative ancestral roots do not have the final say over your life. The cross of Christ separates you from every curse and connects you to the blessings of Abraham. But it begins with being born again. Once you surrender to Christ, you can walk in His truth, apply His blood, and decree His blessings over your life and generations.

Today, step into your freedom, and walk in the blessing of Christ Jesus—for whom the Son sets free is free indeed (John 8:36).
