What Technology Would You Be Better Off With? A Christian Perspective

What technology would you be better off without, why?

In today’s world, technology is an inseparable part of our daily lives. From smartphones and laptops to social media platforms and advanced AI tools, we are surrounded by innovations that promise convenience, connectivity, and efficiency. Yet, as Christians, we must ask ourselves: What technology truly adds value to our lives, and what might we be better off without?

Stewardship of Technology

God has given us the gift of intellect to create and innovate. Technology itself is not inherently bad; it is a tool. However, the way we use it determines whether it draws us closer to God or distracts us from Him. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.” This wisdom applies to our use of technology.

Technology That Helps Us Grow Spiritually

There are many tools that can enhance our walk with God. Consider Bible apps, which allow us to access God’s Word anywhere, or Christian podcasts and YouTube channels that provide teachings and worship. Technology like this aligns with Philippians 4:8, encouraging us to focus on what is “true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy.”

Similarly, apps for prayer reminders or platforms that connect us with other believers can help us stay accountable and engaged in our spiritual growth. These tools amplify the good and encourage habits that foster our relationship with God.

Technology That Distracts or Hinders

On the flip side, there are technologies that, while not inherently sinful, may hinder our spiritual lives. Excessive time on social media, for example, can lead to comparison, pride, or even despair. The endless scroll can rob us of time meant for prayer, family, or ministry.

Likewise, entertainment platforms, when misused, can lead us to consume content that is contrary to our faith values. Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:22-23 about guarding our eyes because they are the “lamp of the body.” If we fill our eyes and minds with darkness, our spiritual vision becomes clouded.

Practical Questions to Ask

To discern what technology you might be better off with (or without), ask yourself these questions:

1. Does this tool glorify God? Can you use it in a way that honors Him and benefits your spiritual growth?

2. Does it bring balance or chaos? Is it helping you fulfill your responsibilities, or does it disrupt your priorities?

3. Does it encourage connection or isolation? Are you using it to build relationships, or does it pull you away from meaningful community?

4. Does it align with God’s purpose for your life? Are you stewarding your time and resources in ways that align with your calling?

Moving Forward

As believers, we are called to be wise and discerning in all areas of life, including our use of technology. Romans 12:2 encourages us not to conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Let’s apply this principle by making conscious decisions about the technology we use.

Consider fasting from certain devices or platforms for a season and observing how it affects your spiritual life. You might find that some technologies are worth keeping, while others are worth letting go of.

Ultimately, let us aim to use technology as a tool to glorify God, grow in our faith, and fulfill the Great Commission. In doing so, we align our lives with His will and make room for His blessings in every area, including our digital spaces.

What about you? Are there technologies that bring you closer to God or ones you feel you’d be better off without? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let’s grow together in wisdom and faith!
