The Joy of the Lord: What Makes You Laugh?

In the hustle and bustle of life, amidst trials and tribulations, have you ever paused to ponder what truly makes you laugh? Laughter is a gift from God, a reflection of His joy that resides within us. As we delve into the depths of Scripture, we uncover profound truths about the essence of laughter and its divine significance in our lives.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 (KJV) declares, “A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Indeed, laughter is ordained by God Himself as a vital aspect of the human experience. It is a testament to His grace and mercy that even in the midst of life’s challenges, He grants us moments of joy and mirth.

Proverbs 17:22 (KJV) affirms, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” Laughter possesses remarkable healing power, rejuvenating our spirits and revitalizing our souls. It is a manifestation of the joy that flows from knowing and walking with the Lord.

As Christians, our laughter should be grounded in righteousness and purity. Proverbs 15:13 (KJV) reminds us, “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.” Our joy is not fleeting or superficial but springs forth from a deep-seated relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Furthermore, Psalm 126:2 (KJV) proclaims, “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.” Our laughter becomes a testimony to the goodness and faithfulness of God, drawing others into His marvelous light.

In the New Testament, we witness Jesus Himself embracing laughter and merriment. Luke 6:21 (KJV) records His words, “Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.” Even in times of sorrow, Jesus promises us the assurance of laughter, a divine exchange of mourning for joy.

However, our laughter should always be tempered with wisdom and discernment. Proverbs 14:13 (KJV) warns, “Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.” Let us guard our hearts against frivolity and seek joy in alignment with God’s Word and His perfect will.

Ultimately, our laughter finds its fullest expression in the presence of the Lord. Psalm 16:11 (KJV) declares, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” As we abide in His presence, our laughter becomes a symphony of praise, glorifying the name of Jesus.

So, dear brothers and sisters, when asked, “What’s you laugh?” let us answer with confidence and conviction: our laughter is a testament to the boundless love and joy found in our Savior, Jesus Christ. May our hearts overflow with laughter that springs from a deep and abiding relationship with Him, illuminating the world with the radiance of His glory. Amen.
