Halloween, with its costumes and candy, has become a widely celebrated holiday. However, as Christians, it’s essential to examine our participation in this festivity through the lens of our faith. The Bible is our guide, and it offers clear guidance on why believers of Christ should distance themselves from the Celebration of Halloween.
1. Ephesians 5:11: “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” This verse reminds us to distance ourselves from sinful actions and expose them rather than participating in them. It underscores the importance of moral discernment and standing against evil.
2. Psalm 1:1: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.” Here, the Bible emphasises the blessedness of those who do not associate with the wicked. It highlights the significance of the company we keep and how it can influence our lives.
3. Proverbs 4:14-15: “Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way.” While this verse applies broadly to sin and wickedness, it underscores the need to deliberately avoid evil influences.
4. Matthew 5:16: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Instead of participating in dark and evil influences, we are called to reveal the light, as expressed by Jesus.
It’s important to note that Halloween is often associated with witchcraft and sorcery, practices that are explicitly condemned in the Bible:
5. Deuteronomy 18:10-12: In the Old Testament, no one in the community of Israel could practice divination, tell fortunes, or engage in magic. These practices are clearly forbidden.
6. Galatians 5:19-21: The Apostle Paul lists sorcery among the works of the flesh, similar to idolatry and sexual immorality, and warns that those who engage in these practices won’t inherit the Kingdom of God.
7. Revelation 21:8: In the book of Revelation, a list of sins and those who will be condemned includes sorceresses. This serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of participating in such practices.

As Christians, we are called to be a light in the world, to stand against darkness, and to avoid associations with evil and wickedness. Halloween’s ties to sorcery and the celebration of darkness run counter to these biblical principles. Instead, let us focus on honouring God, living in the light, and being a positive influence in the lives of those around us. This is how we can truly reflect our faith and glorify our Father in heaven.
