Subjecting Crushes to Christ: A Christian Perspective on First Love

Write about your first crush.

As Christians, our faith calls us to navigate the complexities of life with Christ at the center of our hearts. When it comes to matters of love and emotions, it is essential to examine our experiences through the lens of Scripture. In this blog, we will explore the concept of crushes, the significance of Jesus as our first love, and the importance of prioritizing true and genuine love in relationships. Let us delve into the Word of God to find guidance and wisdom for our journey.

1. Placing Jesus as Our First Love:

In the book of Matthew, Jesus Himself declares, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). This verse highlights the paramount importance of having an intimate relationship with Jesus as our first love. As we grow in our faith, we realize that no human love can surpass the love of Christ. He is the foundation upon which all our relationships should be built.

2. Understanding Crushes:

While crushes are a natural part of life, we must exercise caution in how we handle them. Proverbs 4:23 advises us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This verse encourages us to be mindful of our emotions, ensuring that they align with God’s will. Crushes, often based on superficial attractions or infatuation, can distract us from God’s purpose and lead us away from His best for our lives.

3. Cultivating True and Genuine Love:

In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the Apostle Paul provides us with a beautiful description of love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” This biblical definition of love encourages us to pursue relationships founded on selflessness, respect, and commitment.

4. Prioritizing Relationships:

While it is essential to have a godly perspective on crushes, it is equally important to understand the significance of marriage and family. Ephesians 5:25 reminds husbands to love their wives sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church. The Bible also instructs parents to raise their children in the ways of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). These verses emphasize the significance of genuine, long-lasting relationships and the responsibility we have in nurturing them.

As Christians, it is vital for us to subject our emotions, including crushes, to the lordship of Jesus Christ. He should always be our first love, and our relationships should reflect His love and teachings. While crushes can be a part of life, we must ensure that we approach them with discernment and prioritize true and genuine love in our interactions with others. May we find strength, guidance, and fulfilment in Christ as we navigate the complexities of love and relationships.
