It is a common belief that wealth indicates success and happiness. However, as Christians, we must understand that wealth is not a goal in and of itself but rather a byproduct of living a life of obedience and faithfulness to God.
The Bible guides us toward financial prosperity that aligns with God’s will.
Here are some biblical principles that can guide us on the path to wealth:
1. Seek God first
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse reminds us that our priority should be to seek God and His righteousness. When we do that, all the other things we need, including wealth, will be added.
2. Be diligent and hardworking
Proverbs 10:4 tells us that “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” God blesses the work of our hands when we put in the effort and are diligent in our work. This means being proactive and taking action to pursue opportunities that can lead to financial prosperity.
3. Give generously
In 2 Corinthians 9:6-8, Paul reminds us that “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” Giving generously to others, whether to our church, charities, or those in need, not only blesses others but also opens us up to receive blessings from God.
4. Avoid debt and live within your means
Proverbs 22:7 tells us that “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender.” Being in debt can be a significant barrier to financial prosperity. We must learn to live within our means and avoid accumulating debt, limiting our ability to save and invest in our future.
5. Practice wise stewardship
In Luke 16:10-11, Jesus says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” We must be good stewards of the resources that God has entrusted us, whether our time, talents, or finances. This means investing wisely, saving for the future, and not wasting our resources on frivolous things.
In conclusion, becoming wealthy, according to the Bible, is not about chasing money for its own sake but about living a life of obedience to God’s principles. Seeking God first, working hard, giving generously, avoiding debt, and practising wise stewardship are all essential principles that can guide us toward financial prosperity. By following these biblical principles, we can achieve wealth that honours God and blesses others.
