As Christians, we believe the Holy Spirit is integral to our faith. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity, the Father, and the Son. The Holy Spirit is often called the Advocate, the Helper, the Comforter, or the Spirit of Truth.
In this blog post, we will explore the significance of the Holy Spirit in our lives, particularly in guiding and taking control of our lives.
According to the Bible, a person can receive the Holy Spirit if he or she has accepted Jesus ah Saviour and Lord – If the person is Born again or Saved:
1. Repentance and baptism: In Acts 2:38, Peter said to the crowd, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
2. Asking in faith: In Luke 11:13, Jesus said, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
3. Receiving through prayer and laying on of hands: In Acts 8:17-18, it says, “Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money.”
4. Receiving through faith in Jesus Christ: In John 7:37-39, Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this, he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
One of the most popular phrases Christians use when they want to surrender control of their lives to God is “Holy Spirit take the wheel”. This phrase is inspired by the song “Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood, where the lyrics describe a situation where the protagonist is driving on a snowy road, losing control of her car, and praying for Jesus to take the wheel and guide her.
While the phrase “Holy Spirit take the wheel” is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, the concept of surrendering our lives to the Holy Spirit is supported by various Bible verses. For example, Romans 8:14 says, “For those who the Spirit of God leads are the sons of God.” This verse tells us that if we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, we are considered children of God. It means we have a special relationship with God and can trust the Holy Spirit to guide us in the right direction.
Another verse that supports the idea of surrendering to the Holy Spirit is Galatians 5:16-17. It says, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” This verse reminds us that our fleshly desires can lead us astray, but if we walk in the Spirit, we will not gratify those desires.
The Holy Spirit can help us overcome our sinful nature and guide us towards godly living.
Moreover, in John 16:13, Jesus said, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us in our daily lives and reveal things that are yet to come. This means that the Holy Spirit can help us make wise decisions and give us insight into future events.
In conclusion, surrendering our lives to the Holy Spirit is a powerful act of faith. It means acknowledging that we cannot control everything in our lives and that we need the guidance and direction of God. By allowing the Holy Spirit to take the wheel, we trust God’s plan for our lives. As we walk in the Spirit, we can experience the peace, joy, and freedom that come from living a life surrendered to God.
