By His Stripes We Were Healed

But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
Isaiah 53:5 NLT

There is a debate that had been on for some time about the correctness of the teachings that imply that all the Stripes that Jesus received equaled the number of categories of diseases on earth. Some argue in support of 40 stripes and so 40 diseases and others claim 39 stripes.

Some intellectuals have been so bent on proving their theories that they are in danger of missing out on the Truth all together: the eternal blessedness of the Divine reality that “by His Stripes we were healed” and what it meant for any man who would call upon the Name of the Lord.

Nevertheless it was impressed upon my heart to do some research on the subject and what you are about to read is the result of that Divinely guided research. I pray that you will be blessed as you read. In Jesus Name. Amen.

SO THEN Pilate took Jesus and scourged (flogged, whipped) Him.

Just before His crucifixion, Jesus was scourged by the Romans (John 19:1). The Bible does not directly indicate how many lashes Jesus received.

Deuteronomy 25:3 states that a criminal should not receive more than forty lashes.

Forty stripes may be given him but not more, lest, if he should be beaten with many stripes, your brother should [be treated like a beast and] seem low and worthless to you.

In order to avoid possibly accidentally breaking this command, the Jews would only give a criminal 39 lashes. The Apostle Paul mentioned this practice in 2 Corinthians 11:24, “five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.”

Five times I received from [the hands of] the Jews forty [lashes all] but one; [Deut. 25:3.]

It is worth to note and be reminded that Jesus was scourged by the Romans, not by the Jews.

There is believed to be an old Roman law or tradition that said forty lashes were a death sentence. In Roman times, it was deemed that if a flogger were to appropriately administer a punishment, he should be able to kill a man with forty lashes. Depending on the circumstances, if he failed to kill a man in forty lashes, the flogger would face death. This was to insure that the flogger would not hold back in meting out the punishment.

Using this same logic, the Romans determined that 39 lashes shouldn’t kill a person so that was the most you could give a person, without a sentence of death by flogging.

Scourging was the punishment ordered for Jesus by Pontius Pilate: He was to be flogged (Matthew 27:26) but not killed in that way. His death was to be carried out by crucifixion after the scourging (whipping).

So he set free for them Barabbas; and he [had] Jesus whipped, and delivered Him up to be crucified.

By His Stripes you were healed, goes beyond the counting of the lashes. Let there be a better understanding and a more Divinely rooted Truth in you that all the healing needed for any illness or disease was covered in the fulfilment of the prophecy in Isaiah 53:5 because Jesus was pierced, crushed, beaten and whipped “so we could be healed”

SO THEN Pilate took Jesus and scourged (flogged, whipped) Him.

All the stripes or scourgings or lashes Jesus received fulfilled the requirements to heal whatever the amount of or the group of or category of or families of diseases or illnesses.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
